E3 2013 Sony 'No Nonsense' Summary

title

More E3? YES, MORE E3! There’s enough of it for everyone, so sit back in your chair and take a look at my one-stop guide to Sony’s press conference. As always this gets my 100% guarantee for absolutely no B******t, with nothing but pure content for you to soak up. Check it out in the article below...

Kicking off the conference is information on the PS Vita, with Sony showing they will continue to support the handheld console into the next generation of consoles. To mark this, Sony announced the release of several new and remade titles for the handheld, including the God of War remakes and a rehash of Final Fantasy 10. Full list and Trailers found here.

Onto PS3 Games next with Sony putting the spin on their last few releases before the next generation hits the shelves. Here’s a quick list of what was shown:

But enough of that stuff! Sony finishes up with what’s happening now, and begins their tease-fest of announcements and boy do they leave me wanting more.

The Order: Ye-olde’-time soldiers in a Steam punk London’esque setting fighting Werewolves. There’s nothing about that sentence I don’t like the sound of. No gameplay offered here but I definitely want to see more.

Killzone Shadow Fall: A first glimpse at the next Killzone title, with what seems like a spin-off of sorts to the main series. There is definitely a focus on gadgets and stealth, suggesting some new gameplay elements are to come. Unfortunately...it’s yet another FPS.

Drive Club: Vroom Vroom! Yup, you guessed it. That’s the sound of my head grinding against the road as yet another driving game is announced. The trailer for Drive Club is at least true to its word, I mean, there is driving in it....

Infamous Second Son: The next iteration of everyone’s favourite superhero/villain action game from Sucker Punch, with a slight (and I mean slight...) twist. This time around you will control an entirely different protagonist, with powers over smoke.

Knack: One to watch here! Knack tells the tale of a small robot with a ‘Katamari’ style ability, making him able to rapidly expand and change form at-will by assembling various components from his surroundings. The game looks gorgeous and could easily pass as a Pixar film.

The Dark Sorcerer (Prototype): No one really knows what this title is. The trailer is all CG and showcases an angry wizard dramatically casting a spell, only for a mistake to be made and a complete comical spin come across the whole scene. It has piqued the attention of most, including myself.

Transistor: The guys that made Bastion are having another stab at it, it being another isometric adventure title. I’m a little disappointed there isn’t much new in the way of gameplay variation in this upcoming title, but this was only a teaser so there’s still time for something interesting to happen.

OctoDad - Deadly Catch: One of the most hilarious games you will ever play, Octodad will see its premiere on consoles with the sequel to the popular arm flailing sea spy’s mishap adventures.

Oddworld: Is this a new entry? Is it a remake? I have no idea, but I don’t care. Abe games are always top notch and this time seems to be no exception. They are blissfully flaunting their heritage, keeping the classic 2d viewpoint and slapstick humour that made the originals great.

Diablo 3: OH MY GOD ITS THE NEXT DIABL....oh is that it? Yes, Diablo 3 crawls over to the console scene in this PS4 iteration of Blizzards Isometric RPG, but not everyone will be impressed here. The game itself received a lukewarm reception on PC launch, and I can’t see it faring much better on console.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII AKA 15 now: Square, you crazy. This is the only company I’ve ever seen take SO LONG developing a game, that they decided to just rename it as a sequel (in front of everyone at the conference too!) However no one was complaining. The CG and gameplay shown looked as gorgeous as ever.

Kingdom Hearts 3: JRPG fans around the world shared a collective trickle of excitement when KoH 3 was announced. This is a true childhood gem for most, and the next iteration looks to bring the series forward into the new age, but will it be able to complete with all that nostalgia?

NBA2K14: I can’t say I’m a big fan of sports games, but it never ceases to amaze me how much effort is put into trying to perfect the art of animation. NBA2K14 is definitely trying hard to capture the fluidity of motion, if nothing else...

The Elders Scrolls Online: The idea of an Elder Scrolls MMO excites me to no end. An Elder Scrolls MMO on consoles however, fills me with more doubt than I could even begin to measure. With past attempts to conquer that console MMO title failing miserably, this is only cause for concern in my opinion, but only time will tell...

Mad Max: Pure CG here, but it didn’t stop everyone getting excited about the idea of a Mad Max game. We have literally no idea what the game will be like but screw it, its freaking Mad Max!

Destiny: There was a beefy portion of gameplay footage handed out here, detailing some of the aspects of multiplayer elements. The game looks fantastic, and if I could use two games to compare what I’ve seen, it would be a cross of Borderlands and Halo.

Drawing to a conclusion now, and Sony has 2 aces up its sleeves. The first is greeted with an uproar of applause as it is announced the PS4 WILL NOT REQUIRE CONSTANT ONLINE ACCESS OR USE DRM ON GAMES. (...Hold on let me just bold that text up.....yup, now it’s good and visible) This was one of the biggest things to come out of Sony’s conference, and boy did the audience love it. But what is the second ace you ask? Well Sony has also managed to incorporate a much cheaper launch price for their title too, with the PS4 going on sale at $399/ €399/£349. That’s a huge price gap in today’s economy, and one that may well sway a few decisions in the coming months.

And that’s all we’ve got time for in today’s wrap up, with Sony and Microsoft now out of the way we’ve still got the Nintendo direct information as well as Ubisoft and EA’s conferences to cover, so stay tuned!
