New this week on Indie Saturday Premiere - Krautscape

An original multiplayer racing game Krautscape has come to Steam. Released as an Early Access game on March 31st Krautscape is described as: "An action-packed racing game with bird-like flying cars, focused on competitive multiplayer gameplay. The leading player actively builds the racetrack while the chasing players can take shortcuts by flying off the track to overcome obstacles. But the track is needed to score and to get speed – the vehicles don't have any thrusters to accelerate while flying. The three multiplayer gamemodes are designed to support nonlinear gameplay and intelligent movement instead of forcing you to drive perfectly. "

The game boasts short action packed multiplayer racing sessions, a new track is created each play session, three multiplayer modes with different goals & gameplay, single player practice mode, keyboard and gamepad (XBox 360 & PS3) support and more.

I had a chance to catch up with Mario von Rickenbach:

Your inspiration behind Krautscape comes from the world renowned german inventor Dr. Konrad von Krautkopf. How did you come across his "work" and what was the driving factor in your decision to create a game from it?

Inventors are cool. Ingenious inventors who died under tragic circumstances are even cooler. That’s what Dr. Konrad von Krautkopf is, so we thought it’s a good story to base a game on. And his highly accurate plans for the Krautscape made the work so easy, we just copied his designs without any additional effort. We also thought stealing from a dead man’s ideas is easy because he can’t sue us with copyright claims.

Are there plans for implementing customization for not only the vehicles but the tracks as well?

There are currently no plans to customize the tracks, although it would be an interesting thing to think about. But there will be new obstacles and track items anyway, just probably not customizable ones.

Now that the game has launched what can the Steam community look forward to in terms of content updates.

The core of the game is finished, now we’re mainly working on balancing, polishing that core to make it more fun and fixing all the bugs. We’ll also add new features while working on it during the next few months. For example, there will be a singleplayer practice game mode.

Before that, we’ll launch an update very soon, that includes:
- Gameplay changes in Ping Pong and Collector mode
- We received a lot of interesting feedback about the controls, so this update hopefully fixes many problems with gamepads that don’t work and changes the default gamepad controls to work with the triggers.
- The much requested Linux version
- Tons of bugfixes (and probably lots of new bugs :)
- Improved driving physics
- Improved networking interpolation

The ability to "fly" off the track is so unique that if you are into racing games Krautscape is worth looking into. Want to learn more about Dr. Konrad von Krautkopf then follow him on twitter as well as Facebook.
