New this week on Indie Saturday Premiere - Montas

Billed as a first person survival horror adventure Montas comes to Steam Early Access from Organic Humans. The developers intentions are to immerse you into a dark world where the lines of reality blur. In fact the load screen recommends you to play in a dark room with headphones  on so I did just that.

When you awaken in your office it's dark, you're alone and disoriented did I mention it's dark? From the get go you get the feeling of going slow is definately the pace you want to use until you have to run. So far in my gameplay there have been quite a few "scare" parts, the sounds are super creepy and there are plenty of dark places. The exploration factor for the game allows you to reveal hidden content, underground labyrinths and more allowing for replayablitly.

I had a chance to catch up with Garth from Organic Humans:

You guys have done a great job building a disorienting and at times scary environment. What was your inspiration behind Montas?

Montas has many inspirations, from Silent Hill to the original Bioshock. However the themes, style and approach  to the game reference disorientating films such as Dark City and The Machinist, Japanese horror cinema like Dark Water, The Ring, One Missed Call, and finally a touch of conspiracy theory from the television show the X-Files.

Will there be a storymode to play through?

It was a difficult choice to restrict story content in the Early Access version of the game, from the beginning Montas was created as a story driven experience. In retrospect though I believe it was the right decision. We now have the time and an opportunity to raise the funds necessary to create the story this genre deserves. The Early Access version provides a good introduction to the mechanics and setting of the game, while managing to avoid any significant spoilers to the planned story-arc. The way we approached the Early Access version was directly inspired by the first 20 minutes of most mystery thriller movies, generally they are very vague and disorientating but contains heavy foreshadowing (The Matrix, Dark City etc). Foreshadowing is how I would describe the events in the Early Access version. We are currently working very hard to carefully and attentively develop the full planned story for Montas.

At the moment there are no weapons or maps in the environment. Is this intentional or will one or both be added at some point?

Montas does not contain weaponry, or any means really that would allow the player to escape a dangerous situation by simply clicking on the threat. We want players to have to solve a problem, use their wits or stealth to overcome a threat. This is something we will be focusing more on for the final version. As for maps, they will come with the story. I'm not talking HUD maps or Mini-maps either, I mean station maps in the subway and hand-drawn directions to secret places.

Is there an ETA for the official launch?

The launch date for the full game will mostly depend on sales of the Early Access version, as more funds will allow faster development, but regardless of that we are aiming to release within a year of the Early Access launch.

This is an Early Access game so you will encounter bugs and environment glitches needless to say if you have to have a polished finished game then I would suggest waiting. If you're one to roll up your sleeves, look for bugs and like to submit feedback then I would recommend this game.

They've designed the Early Access version to be an introduction to the game without spoiling the storyline of the final release. They have the game priced at $10.00 which will be the same price when launched. If you purchase thru Early Access upon release you will also recieve the Collector's Edition which includes the digital Artbook and the Soundtrack which is valued at $30.00.
