Endnight Games has created an impressive survival horror game called The Forest which is currently in Early Access on Steam. The premise behind the game is you're the lone survivor of a plane crash in a mysterious forest. This game has it all ... a dynamic world to wander through, a handy survival book to help guide you, you're able to hunt, gather and build what you don't want to do is draw the attention of the locals. I know what you're thinking locals = help ... wrong! These carnivorous mutant like beings are far from helpful. I found this out on Day 1 & I run like the wind when I catch site of them.
Here's a peek into my first Day 1: on a plane, we crash I wake up. Of course the logical thing to do is scavenge the plane for supplies and food and see if there are any survivors. While running around killing bunnies and picking berries I glance up startled to see what appears to be a native. I've read the forums and some of the warnings and yet I still had to see for myself if they are as deadly as I've heard. Let me tell you they may run at first but they, like Arnold, will be back and with reinforcements under the cover of night. I can say I've jumped more then once much to the delight of my family.
To check out more of the game without the fear of attacks I turned on the newly released "veganmode" which is available upon game start up and headed out. No compass or map is available however when you set up a camp you will have a house icon appear on your screen when you face in the general direction of it. Your survival book has so much useful information and it is also doubles as a way to craft shelters, fires and more.
I pulled some of the Q&A from the Steam forums since these had similar questions to what I normally pose to the devs.
If you have an altercation with a mutant in which he/she survives, will they remember this and will this affect the way he/she next approaches you?
Cannibals and mutants have a loyalty to one another. Fighting with one can result in them running off for reinforcements or approaching you later with more caution. They can stalk you from afar or become more aggressive. During the alpha behaviors will be added and changed, so be prepared for surprises.
What other predatory animals will we see in The Forest besides the shark? And will these pose a threat to mutants?
The focus of the game is on your struggle against these cannibals. As the game is set in a north american style forest we’re a little limited in the type of predatory animals we can have. Bears didn't really make sense for the style of game we’re making. Although running into a massive tiger or being eaten by a crocodile could be pretty funny, we feel it would take players out of the game world we’ve created and not really be true to the spirit of the game.
How effective will player camouflage and base camouflage be? Is it possible to have a base that's completely hidden from the enemy?
Structure camouflage is a lot more useful in the early game, as you develop a bigger base it’s going to be much harder to hide. We’re trying to make the system feel natural, and so whilst your visibility will be lowered if you're covered in mud and hiding in a bush, getting too close will still reveal you to the enemies.
You can grab The Forest on Steam for $14.99 and get in now before the public Alpha starts in 10 days.
