A live-action Pat Labor movie is indeed in the works. Separated into 7 parts, the first part scheduled to air on April 5th 2014. Each episode is said to be about 40 minutes long with the movie about 100 minutes which is scheduled to to be released sometime in the Spring of 2015.
The project is not a remake of the earlier Patlabor anime stories, but a completely new work. The story is set in Tokyo in 2013, and it represents the "third generation" of Patlabor. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police has disbanded its Section 2 Division 1 of police robots, and Section 2 Division 2 barely survived the budget cuts due to the long recession.
With the Pat Labor movie project underway, Suidobashi Heavy Industry put up a listing on Amazon for the Kuratas, a four-wheel, humanoid robot big enough to fit an adult human in its cockpit.
The Kuratas sold out almost immediately. Can you imagine? These things walking around the streets? The video is just too funny to watch though.
