We got a chance to chat with Matt Clifton, the one and only developer at PolyPusher studios on his upcoming indie horror game – Montague’s Mount. Before I say anything else, let me throw down this disclaimer. This game is for all intents and purposes, an Irish game, so forgive the impending stereotypes that are no doubt going to litter the paragraphs below.
I’m so so so sorry Ireland...
Montague’s Mount is a ‘psychological roller-coaster’ of a game in which the player is stranded on a desolate coastal island with no memory of how he got there. Before we even spoke with Matt it was clear that the game had a high production value, with stunning visuals that are made more impressive because of his solo status. Want to full story? Investigate the full article below...
Gameplay is heavily focused on the narrative, and from what we got to see there has been no expense spared to promote this feeling of story, from the little snippets of information gleamed by inspecting seamlessly insignificant items in the environment all the way to the games narrator, voiced by the talented Derek Riddell (Of Five Days/Ugly Betty fame). It’s also worth mentioning that the game is possibly the first of its kind to promote the use of Gaelic, the Celtic language of ye olde’ Ireland, inside a video game. With most of the items you inspect being described in the ‘Glorious Leprechaun language’ it adds a unique twist to the proceedings (There are English translations underneath, so don’t panic!)
Progressing through the game is achieved by way of overcoming logic based puzzles or scavenging the surrounding area to gather up all the important potatoes necessary to move on. During the play-through I witnessed, the player had to collect several cogs scattered throughout a series of abandoned shacks in order to operate a mechanical lock. As the player navigated up to the shack at the end of the path, he spots a figure in the distance. A man, possibly? It’s hard to tell with the storm battering your senses. The figure leads us towards the shack on the left, and upon entering it you notice 2 bodies slumped over the table. No blood, no gore, just bodies. This is something echoed through the game, with the main scares coming from a well crafted environment and strange occurrences like the strange figure we saw.
It’s truly impressive to see all of the games aspects collaborate in a way that helps to create a believable atmosphere which constantly walks the line between intrigue and horror. This achievement is compounded by Matt’s dedication towards his project, of which he is the sole developer for, making his achievement all the more inspiring. Montague’s Mount came out of nowhere and took everyone by surprise at Rezzed, and I have no doubts in my mind to claim this as one of my favourite titles being shown.
Matt describes how the game will take roughly 4 hours to complete in its finished state, and estimates at a price point of about £10, which is typical faire for an indie game of this kind. There is no official launch date for the title though, but he expects the game to come into its final stages soon, so keep your eyes and ears peeling for more info on this one. If you like what you see, go check out the game at its official site here and be sure to vote it up on Greenlight.
I like to think I got through that without too many Ireland jokes, so I’m off to go drink a gallon of Guinness and do the Riverdance until I drop...Okay yea I failed to keep it PC.
